The Western Pennsylvania Hospital

The Western Pennsylvania Hospital is an academic medical center with two hospital campuses that serve Pittsburgh and the surrounding five-state area:  The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh and its Forbes Regional Campus in Monroeville. Founded in 1848 as Pittsburgh’s first chartered public hospital, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital has earned an international reputation for excellence and innovation in the care of patients, medical education and research.

The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh is the first and only hospital in western Pennsylvania to be awarded Magnet recognition status by the American Nurses Credentialing Center in 2006. This prestigious designation recognizes excellence in nursing services.

Together, West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh and its Forbes Regional Campus in Monroeville admit nearly 34,000 patients, log more than 69,000 emergency visits and perform approximately 22,000 surgical procedures annually. Approximately 1,300 physicians and 3,700 employees on both campuses share the hospital’s commitment to excellence.

Part of West Penn Allegheny Health System, West Penn Hospital is a leader in the education of healthcare professionals, providing clinical training to third- and fourth-year medical students of the Philadelphia-based Temple University School of Medicine.

West Penn also provides education programs for nurses and other members of the healthcare team, including a School of Nursing (affiliated with Clarion University of Pennsylvania); a School of Respiratory Care (affiliated with Indiana University of Pennsylvania); and the Pennsylvania State University/Western Pennsylvania Hospital Program of Radiologic Technology.
