Supporting Our Mission

Since 1969, individual donors, corporations and philanthropic organizations have helped West Penn Burn Center provide medical care, rehabilitative service and emotional support to thousands of burn injury victims.

This support makes it possible for the Burn Center to provide thousands of dollars in free care services each year.

The services listed below are supported, in part, by the generosity of donors.

Patient Care Fund

Many families travel great distances to reach West Penn Burn Center, and some have limited economic resources. This fund helps with the cost of transportation, meals and housing for families while burn victims are treated in the Burn Center.

Summer Camp for Burned Children

Children with burn injuries often have physical and emotional scars. Since 1987, the Burn Center has hosted an annual five-day Summer Burn Camp at no charge for youngsters who have been patients at West Penn Burn Center. At camp, children have fun in a supportive environment and gather strength from their peers and counselors.

Burn Prevention and Back-To-School programs

West Penn Burn Center offers burn prevention outreach programs to teach kids and adults how to prevent burn injuries. The Back-To-School Program helps ease a burned child’s return to the classroom. A professional from the Burn Center visits the school and talks with teachers and classmates to help them understand the burn victim’s situation—and presents a safety program to help prevent other burn injuries.

Physical Therapy

Children may not understand that sometimes-painful physical therapy will help them in the long run. Donations make it possible to give each child who needs it an appropriate toy to encourage the child to continue physical therapy exercises. A child who has burned fingers, for example, may receive a hand-held video game that distracts a child from the discomfort of hand exercises.
